Muscle relaxing injections consist of Botulinum toxin type A which has been medically used for over 20 years. When this medicine is injected into the muscles it relaxes them to soften their appearance. After injection, it blocks the nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract when we use our expression such as frowning or smiling. Frown lines and wrinkles are natural results of the ageing process, mainly due to the loss of soft tissue beneath the outer surface of the skin. In some patients noticable frown lines can be disturbing and sometimes have a negative impact on their daily lives, which is an indication for this treatment. Lyndsey is now an advanced aesthetic practitioner which enables her to treat the lower face with butulinum toxin type A, plus also the platysmal bands of the neck and treatments for hyperhydrosis (sweaty armpits).
During the consultation, you will be asked about your medical history, whether you are currently taking any medicines, and whether you have had any facial treatments in the past. You may also be asked about your expectations of the treatment results. The possible unwanted side effects will be explained to you and the information leaflet within the medication will be provided for you to read, and any questions you may have will be answered.
Potential adverse reactions are mild swelling at the injection site, headache,localised numbness,bruising, rash and ptosis / drooping lid (temporary loss of function of the nearby muscles). The treatment itself should take around 15 minutes to perform. The areas to be treated will be cleaned with a sterile wipe and then the medicine will be injected with a very fine needle, the injections should not cause much discomfort.
After the treatment you should follow the instructions below;
Refrain from touching the treated area for 3 - 4 hours.
Remain upright for 3 - 4 hours.
Do not engage in strenuous exercise right after treatment.
Repeatedly tense the treated muscle groups during the 2 hours, as the toxin works better in active muscles.
We advise not to utilise sun beds for 24 hours.
Avoid any situation that will lead to blood rushing to your head e.g. eating hot curries.
You will see the results of your treatment between 2 and 21 days afterwards. At this stage you will have a review to see how the treatment has taken effect and if this was your desired outcome. At this time we can give adjustments if needed. No medicine will be administered after four weeks as this can lead to antibody formation and subsequent immunity of the medicine in the future.
